Private tab

Cleared when you close it
Websites and your network can still see private browsing.
01

Start a private session

Open the tab switcher and choose Private, then create a private tab. Close the private tabs when done. Some builds offer an Android shortcut or a setting to open external links privately.

Protect it with a screen lock. Anyone with your unlocked phone can see local data.

02

What stays local

Private browsing avoids adding that session to ordinary browser history after the tabs close. It does not automatically erase a file you downloaded, a bookmark you created or activity in an account you signed into.

You
WebsiteRequests to its pages, your IP address
Search providerWhat you search for
DNS resolverDomain names you look up
Network operatorConnection metadata, not HTTPS page contents
Account you sign intoActivity on its own service
Each party sees a different slice. No single setting hides you from all of them.
03

Who can still see activity

Websites, your network operator, a school or employer network and the search provider can still observe information relevant to them. Private mode is not anonymity and is not a substitute for device security.
